INSTRUCTIONS FOR PARTICIPANTS

With the commencement of the IST on “Field Theory” scheduled during May 2- 14, 2016 here at Kashmir University, Srinagar only four weeks away, it is expected that all the speakers and participants who have been selected for the School may kindly communicate their travel plans as early as possible, but not later than April, 15th. Unless otherwise absolutely necessary, it would be appreciated if- in the interest of smooth and hassle free lodging of the guests on the campus - it is arranged to arrive in Srinagar not earlier than May1st, 2016 and depart not later than May 15th, 2016. For those who will be travelling by air to Srinagar (other than the speakers), the best option to reach the university campus would be to board the airport bus upto TRC (Tourist Reception Centre) and from there take an auto rickshaw upto the Kashmir university campus (situated near Dargah Hazratbal). Once inside the campus, the driver shall have to be told to take you to the “Sheikh Hamza”guest house situated in the Naseem Bagh campus of the university. Given that the autorickshaws in Srinagar do not charge according to the Govt-approved rates as indicated in the metre installed in the autorickshaw, it is advisable that the rates be preferably negotiated before boarding the vehicle. The normal fares as applicable for this route should not exceed Rs.200/- and may even be quoted by the driver at much less. However, it shouldn't hurt to bargain.

Kindly also note that with the vagaries in weather that have been witnessed in recent weeks and months, it is possible that we may experience light to heavy showers during the month of May which may result in a fall in temperature. That would necessitate bringing along woollens in the form of a jacket, sweater or a court besides, of course, an umbrella which would come in handy in such situations. In the event of weather conditions remaining normal, it is possible that you may have no use for these precautionary measures. Finally, for those who may be travelling by road from Jammu to Srinagar, it is advisable that they plan their travel from Jammu so as to arrive in Srinagar not later than 9 pm. In the event of inclement weather conditions during the course of their travel from Jammu to Srinagar when the highway may get closed for traffic, it is possible that they may have to remain stranded on the highway for a day or two. That is something that just can’t be helped as it is beyond anybody’s control. So one has to be prepared for this eventuality, should it ever occur.

It may also help to briefly indicate the modalities of travel from your places of work to Srinagar. Whereas it is left to the choice of an individual to choose one’s mode of travel, those coming from or travelling via Delhi shall have the option of either travelling

  1. Directly by air from Delhi to Srinagar (about 90 minutes) or
  2. By train from Delhi to Jammu ( 10-14 hours) & then by road (taxi/bus/minibus) from Jammu to Srinagar (8-10 hours) or
  3. By train from Delhi to Jammu & then by air from Jammu to Srinagar (30 minutes).

In respect of (2), the bus/taxi service is available at many places in Jammu including just outside the Jammu railway station.

There are also trains running daily between several cities through the length & breadth of the country and Jammu. Besides, there are also daily flights operating directly between several important cities including in particular Delhi, Bombay, Chennai, Bangalore, Kolkatta and Srinagar. Finally, in spite of several clarifications having been made on this count, a number of queries have been received from several quarters regarding the reimbursement of travel support in favour of the selected participants. I wish to reiterate it one more time that they would have done well to check it with the NCM website about these issues & convinced themselves that there is no room for such a provision. In other words, no travel support is committed to be provided to the participants under the NCM guidelines.

I shall be looking forward to receiving you here in Srinagar.
