The fields of operator algebras and operator theory are branches of functional analysis, which have a profound interaction with numerous areas of mathematics and physics, such as topology, group theory, complex analysis, probability, conformal field theory, statistical mechanics, just to name a few. Using a combination of mini-courses and problem sessions, this AIS aims to provide outstanding M.Sc. students and Ph.D. students with an introduction to various classical as well as modern aspects of operator algebras and operator theory and the topics include basics of C^*-algebras and von Neumann algebras, K-theory of C^*-algebras, theory of H^p spaces on the unit disk, reproducing kernel spaces and pick interpolation on the unit disk, and random matrices. The treatment of these topics will be self-contained and only the basic knowledge in complex analysis and functional analysis will be assumed.
