With the availability of huge amount of data in digitized form along with the improvement in computational and processing prowess in recent times, knowledge of data science and its applications have now pervaded almost all sphere of human activities. The data scientists are to deal with both structured and unstructured data, like texts and images, and find interesting and useful patterns to help explanation and prediction. Institutes, universities and colleges across India have now started offering programmes on Data Science at different levels. Unfortunately, however, a substantial number of teachers do not seem to be well conversant with the mathematical foundation of data science. The topics for this programme are so chosen as to provide the participants a good understanding of the fundamentals of the mathematics that form the foundation of data science as a discipline.
